A season with good prices and shorter harvests

The president of the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Jerte Cherries, Clara Prieto, has stated that, since mid-June, they have began to certify the first picota cherries, of which they expect a volume of “great quality” until the middle or end of July (between 4,000 and 5,000 tons, compared to 6,000 in 2021). To these another 400 certified and already marketed tons of the Navalinda “with stalk” variety must be added.

She explained that between 50% and 60% of picota cherries will be destined for the United Kingdom market, before stating that in the denomination they are “satisfied, because the quality has been good” and they have been able to harvest “everything that was available” .

The weekly prices at origin of the MAPA so far in the cherry season -from week 19 to 24 of 2022- are higher than those registered in the same periods in 2021 and 2019, but sometimes lower than some registered in 2020 or 2018. According to MAPA, this season, in week 24 (from 6th-12th June), the average price was 2.26 euros/kg, 45.69% higher than in 2021 (1.55 euros/kg); the peak (€2.80/kg) was reached in week 20 (from 16th-22nd May), a figure only surpassed in recent years in 2018 (€2.85/kg, week 20 as well).
