We certified more than four million kilos of Picota from the Jerte this season

The Regulatory Council of the Jerte Cherry Protected Designation of Origin closes the 2022 campaign with 4,250,000 kilos of certified Jerte Picota. These correspond to the four recognised varieties: Pico Limón Negro, Pico Negro, Pico Colorado and Ambrunés. The latter is the most highly prized as it is the one that ripens the longest on the tree in the sun, making it the sweetest. The president of the Regulatory Body, Clara Prieto points out that “4,250,000 kilos of excellent quality”. “This season has had fewer kilos than expected in other years, due to late flowering as a consequence of irregular weather conditions”, she explained.

The aim of the PDO Jerte Cherry Regulatory Body for this year is that “the consumer knows how to distinguish between the authentic Picota form the Jerte and the cherry without a stalk, which is marketed under the name of picota”. To this end, the consumer is encouraged to look for “the PDO quality seal of Spain and Europe, which appears on the back label”, Prieto concluded.
